Hydroseeding

Western Canada's largest hydroseeding operation. Fast, cost-effective grass establishment for residential, commercial, municipal, and mine reclamation projects — including drone seeding for hard-access terrain.

The Smart Alternative to Sod

Hydroseeding is an innovative, cost-effective way to achieve a vibrant, healthy lawn or restored slope. The process applies a slurry of seed, mulch, fertilizer, and water directly to prepared soil — promoting faster germination, uniform growth, and a significantly healthier result than traditional broadcast seeding.

Perfect for large areas and difficult terrain, hydroseeding delivers rapid vegetation establishment, reduces soil erosion, and enhances aesthetics. Raincoast applications run the gamut — residential lawns, roadside embankments, large-scale development sites, mine reclamation — providing an environmentally friendly alternative to sodding.

Raincoast and our sister company BPL Hydroseeding have decades of combined experience from Vancouver Island to the BC Interior and into Alberta. We run commercial-grade equipment, including the Finn Titan HT400 — 1.2 acres per tank, slurry projection up to 368 ft — and custom seed mixes tailored to your soil, climate zone, and project goals.

The Fleet

Built for Reach

From the agile Finn T60 to the powerhouse Finn Titan HT400 — 1.2 acres per tank, slurry projection up to 368 ft — our trucks are the reason we can take on terrain that defeats other operators.

Why Homeowners Love Hydroseeding

  • Fast germination — visible growth in as little as 7–10 days.
  • Economical — a dense, green lawn at a fraction of the cost of sod.
  • Erosion control — purpose-built for sloped areas; protects the seedbed while it establishes.

Why Choose Hydroseeding?

Cost-Effective

Typically 50–80% less expensive than sod, especially for large areas and slopes.

Fast Coverage

Cover thousands of square feet in a single day. Visible germination within a week.

Slope-Friendly

The tackifier bonds seed to steep terrain where sod would slide. Ideal for erosion-prone slopes.

Deeper Root System

Grass grown from seed develops stronger roots than transplanted sod, resulting in a more resilient lawn.

Custom Seed Mixes

We blend seed mixes for your specific conditions — sun, shade, drought tolerance, or erosion control.

Erosion Protection

The mulch layer protects exposed soil from rain and wind while seed establishes.

Applications

Residential lawns and yards
Commercial developments and parking areas
Highway and road corridors
Slopes and embankments
Post-construction sites
Subdivisions and new builds
Golf courses and sports fields
Reclamation and restoration projects

Frequently Asked Questions

What is hydroseeding?

Hydroseeding is a planting process that uses a slurry of seed, mulch, fertilizer, and water applied by a high-pressure spray. It's faster and more cost-effective than sod for large areas, slopes, and hard-to-reach terrain. The mulch holds moisture and protects the seed as it germinates.

How long does it take for hydroseeded areas to grow?

You'll typically see germination within 5–7 days, depending on conditions. A full, established lawn usually takes 4–6 weeks. We recommend keeping the area consistently moist during the first few weeks for best results.

Is hydroseeding better than sod?

Hydroseeding is more cost-effective than sod, especially for large or steep areas. It produces a deeper root system since the grass grows from seed directly in your soil. Sod provides instant coverage but at a higher cost. We can help you decide which approach suits your project.

Can you hydroseed slopes and steep terrain?

Absolutely. Hydroseeding is one of the best methods for establishing vegetation on slopes. The tackifier in our mix bonds the seed and mulch to the soil surface, preventing washout on grades that sod can't handle.

What time of year is best for hydroseeding?

Spring (April–June) and early fall (September–October) are ideal across most of our service area. On the coast, moderate temperatures and natural rainfall help with establishment; in the BC Interior and Alberta, we plan around frost windows and irrigation. We can also hydroseed mid-summer with proper irrigation planning.
